We’ve reported on the growing nationwide effort to kill home schooling … spearheaded by terrible legislation being proposed in Maryland and California.
Why do progressive politicians want to regulate – and eventually outlaw – home schooling?
Because they believe that the care and protection – and the rearing and education – of children is the duty and responsibility of the state – not parents.
These politicians also believe that their compelling state interest in controlling education supersedes the parental freedoms guaranteed in 3 constitutional amendments:
- The free exercise of religion clause of the First Amendment
- The prohibition against unlawful searches and seizures of the Fourth Amendment
- The equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment
In California, parents organized and staged a protest on the steps of the state capitol against the original bill to regulate home schools – AB 2756.
Seeing this unexpected organized opposition, California legislators proposed an alternative bill – AB 2926.
This bill sounds very mild on the surface …but it’s actually more dangerous than the original bill…
Because it allows the California State Board of Education to regulate home schools without legislative approval.
You see … California AB 2926 proposes creation of a “diverse advisory committee” to examine 3 areas of homeschooling in the state … and make recommendations to the State Board of Education for possible rulemaking and regulation.
The state education bureaucracy can impose rules and regulations on education in the state – after a 45-day comment period – without requiring regulatory legislation to be voted on and approved by the state legislature.
The members of the State Board of Education are all appointed by the governor… They are not accountable to the people – they can’t be voted out of office.
The members of the “diverse advisory committee” are also to be appointed – unaccountable to the people.
AB 2926 – if passed—will mandate that the committee examine these 3 areas of home schooling:
- Health and safety inspections
- Specific curriculum standards
- Certification or credentialing of teachers
Can you see what will happen if this terrible bill passes?
It will result in the slow death of home schooling – via draconian regulations – by the union-backed bureaucracy.
California may be one of the first states to use this tactic … but it won’t be the last.
The hearing on AB2926 is scheduled for April 26th…
If you live in California, please contact your local assemblyperson and voice your opposition to this end-run ploy to bypass the legislative process…
